The Beaten Path
Fly a MiG
www.incredible-adventures.com/migs/index.html
"Through a company called "Special Adventures," you can arrange to fly
a MiG-29, MiG-25, Su-27, L-39 and others. You take off from the Zhukovsky
Air Base, located just an hour from Moscow. Guided by test pilots, you can
take off with afterburners blazing, climb to the edge of space, go into a
tailspin, or travel at more than twice the speed of sound." – Dominique Winther.
Kuklachyov's Cat Theater
25 Kutuzovsky Prospekt
Metro: Kutuzovsky, Kievskaya
A particularly unique show in Moscow – Cat Theater is similar to a circus,
but features only cats. A famous clown started the show and claims “training”
is a bad word, as it makes it sound like the cats are being forced to
do something they don’t want to do. Instead, they just “play” with the
cats at Kuklachyov’s theater.
Fabrika Krasny Oktyabr (Red October Chocolate
Factory)
Metro: Oktyabrskaya, Park Kultury
This is Willy Wonka in reality. Tours are private and must be organized
for groups. For English tours, contact Patriarshy Dom Tours (www.russiatravel-pdtours.netfirms.com)
– they conduct scheduled tours and special private tours by request. First
you learn about the history of the museum and then you are dressed in
white outfits and hats for a tour of the production facilities, where
you can eat unlimited amounts of chocolate off the belts – a truly amazing
experience.
Gorky Park (ice skating)
Metro: Park Kultury
In the winter, this park is transformed into an enormous ice skating
rink. The carnival games are still present, so you can skate around and
play games. Across the street you will also find Sculpture Park, where
many of the city’s Soviet landmarks have been placed after being taken
down.
River Cruise to St. Petersburg
"If you have some time on your hands, try the river cruises to St. Petersburg.
The cruise stops off at historical Russian cities on the way and includes
interesting tours. My grandparents went on it and really liked it!" – Dominique Winther.
Sandunovskiye Baths
Metro: Teatralnaya, Kuznetsky Most
Just off Ulitsa Petrovka, this is Moscow’s most famous public banya.
For a truly Russian experience, come here to be steamed, washed and beaten
with birch leaves
