The Hirshhorn is the Smithsonian Institution's museum of modern and contemporary art. Works of art by key artists of the twentieth century are presented in a collection. There is an emphasis on art from the last 25 years created by a variety of artists around the world.

The National Air and Space Museum has the largest collection of historic air and spacecraft in the world. It is located on the National Mall, close to many other national museums. A satellite museum —the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia — is less accessible but holds among its displays the retired space shuttle Enterprise, the Gemini VII space capsule, and the Enola Gay, which released its cargo load on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945, ending World War II. Entry to the Udvar-Hazy Center is free, but there is a parking fee.

The National Gallery of Art houses a fine collection of major achievements in painting, sculpture, and graphic arts from the Middle Ages to the present. From mid-November to mid-March, a public ice-skating rink opens in the sculpture garden for the entire family to enjoy! There is a small per-person fee to skate and a separate charge for skate rental.
