The Chevy Chase Pavilion consists of three levels winding around a skylit atrium. The pavilion offers restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory and a good selection of upscale chain stores, including a two-level Pottery Barn, Hold Everything, Loehmann's and Georgette Klinger. Directly across the street is the Mazza Gallerie.

Take Metrorail's Red Line to the Friendship Heights Station.

The Fashion Centre offers more than clothing. This indoor facility has four levels of shops and a skylit food court. It is located just moments from the nation's capital, with its own stop on two Metrorail lines. There's even an underground tunnel from the Metro directly into the building, to keep you dry on rainy or snowy days.

Take Metrorail's Blue or Yellow lines to the Pentagon City Station.

Georgetown Park is a four-level Victorian shopping center with over 100 specialty stores, including many small boutiques and larger outlets like FAO Schwarz and Dean & Deluca. The mall was featured in the movie "True Lies," set in Washington, DC and starring (now Governor) Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Take the Circulator bus running west from almost any K Street bus stop; or hop on earlier, since the bus starts at Union Station and goes up Massachusetts Avenue before turning onto K Street. Georgetown Park is one of the destinations on M Street.

Directly across the street from the Chevy Chase Pavilion, this multi-level shopping mall boasts over 50 shops anchored by Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and an AMC movie theatre.

The streets of Old Town offer modern shopping at Banana Republic and similar stores, as well as boutiques and specialty stores selling harder-to-find treasures. Old Town is noted in the DC Metro area for its many antique shops. There are also pubs and numerous restaurants of various cuisines.

Take Metrorail's Blue Line to the King Street Station. Alexandria's DASH AT2, AT5 and AT7 bus lines go down King Street, or take in the sights and shops as you walk the 15-blocks to the waterfront.

Take Metrorail's Red, Orange, or Blue Lines to the Metro Center Station. Walk 1 block south on 13th Street NW, turn right on F Street NW, walk 1 block and turn left on 14th Street NW. Walk 1 block and turn right on Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Walk 1 block to the Shops.

Featured in Frommer's Washington DC guidebook, these two shopping centers are giants in the industry. Tysons Corner Center offers over 300 options for shopping, eating and entertainment, including free wi-fi. The more exclusive Galleria across the street — a busy highway, so not easily walkable — holds Burberry, Cartier, Chanel, Versace, more than 100 upscale boutiques and eateries, and a direct connection to the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner, named one of the top 50 hotels in the United States by Conde Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Awards. Other retailers nearby include Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Gucci.

Take Metrorail's Orange Line to West Falls Church Station. Tysons I and II are a short taxicab ride away.
